HOOPS FOR HEROES
Mandie is a Real-Life Hero
She and her organization, Worthy of Love aim to transform the way youth experience homelessness. Since 2013, Worthy of Love has thrown unforgettable birthday parties for over 10,000 children and teens experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County.
Families experiencing homelessness often lack the resources needed to celebrate their children on their birthdays. They step in by transforming their environment and providing all-expenses-paid birthday parties for children and families facing homelessness in Los Angeles County.
Back Story: HOOPS FOR HEROES
In early 2020, right when the world collapsed and our healthcare system was fried, we started a movement called Hoops for Heroes (AKA Hugs for Heroes). We were stuck at home, felt hopeless, but still wanted to share a piece of our heart with everyone. Our love language is jewelry. So, we set out to give away as many hug(gies) as possible. The ask was for our customers to purchase a pair of hoops and for every 5 sold, we donated a pair to a nominated hero. We asked for stories and experiences of those serving on the frontlines so that the rest of us could stay safer at home. We collected some compelling stories, including one of a doctor in Boston, who came home from a 12-hour shift in a covid ward to a care package at her front door. There was another from a nurse in Ventura, CA, who is halfway though her first pregnancy working long hours with limited PPE.
Today, we've adjusted to our new normal, but want to carry on the sentiment of: We're in this together! The current version of Hoops for Heroes dedicates a design specifically for one hero and the organization that is dear to them.
